2009 Los Angeles Lakers NBA Season Preview

The Los Angeles Lakers won the NBA championship title last year. That was a grand evening and the fireworks were spectacular. They had one simple thing in mind this year for the championship. They just wanted to keep the core composition of the team intact and watch the young players like Trevor Ariza and Andrew Bynum get better by the day.
That would mean that the stars like Kobe Bryant will eventually get the much needed support up front.

The now-famous Ron Artest was already in their back pocket. He had come into the Los Angeles locker room two years ago just after a dreadful playoff loss and on finding a naked Kobe Bryant in the shower had expressed the strong desire to be his teammate. So, eventually the Lakers gave Artest a five year contract worth $33million.

But Ariza’s agent David Lee started acting tough and started taking his much valued client on a self proclaimed leverage tour. Ariza was then quite forcefully sold off to Houston for a similar figure in order to accommodate the expenses. Artest is presumably in his best behavior and he is still proud and boastful in being one of the best perimeter defenders in the national league. He even challenged all the people that no one would be able to get more than 15 points off him.
Ariza was then forced to sign with Houston for five years and … $33 million.

Kobe Bryant is now all smiles when he hears all these incidents. Lamar Odom had also re-signed after he finally realized that there was no real financial reward or gain for coming off the bench in just his contract year. His insatiable thirst for victory urges him to say that he would love to have the experience of winning eight to ten championships in a row. Odom had a rather inconsistent season last time taking regular night offs, but he came well during the playoff runs. Apart from few other greats, Odom was really number one during the playoffs.

Other worthy mentions like Paul Gasol and Bynum played the perfect supporting cast to Kobe Bryant. While one averaged almost 19 points, 10 rebounds and close to 5 assits, the other one was also equally impressive with his overall performance. At first they were concerned about the chemistry between Gasol, Bynum and Odom. But once the settled down, there was no looking back for them.

Sadly, Bynum had to miss 32 games with a severe knee injury but he showed his brilliance in the playoffs. He is indeed a flashy player who likes to finish with quick dunks and encouraging his team mates to use him incredibly long reach.

The undisputed star of the show was Bryant who finally decided to take a rest in the off season. He averaged a phenomenal 33 points in the Finals and won the most valuable player of the entire series.

The other important players like Derek Fisher and Sasha Vujacic have also been impressive and so, this year the entire team is hoping for an encore.
